Review and Giveaway: The Demon’s Surrender

There are very few authors that I will drop everything to read something new by them. Normally, I can contain myself enough that I’ll finish the book I’m currently reading. Sarah Rees Brennan is one of those authors. I dug my copy of The Demon’s Surrender out of the just-delivered boxes because I wanted it NOW.

It lived up to my expectations and then some! Sin’s POV is different to Nick’s and Mae’s, presenting an alternate view on characters and events that have already happened, yet similar enough in atmosphere and tone that it fits into the trilogy. I fell for Sin, her voice and how she viewed the world, and the secrets that were revealed about her and the Goblin Market.

(I’m one of those people who loves that the trilogy is narrated by three different people. We get all these alternate views on characters and situations! People are revealed to not be what they think or seem! It’s quite frankly awesome.)

The Demon’s Surrender is a fitting conclusion to Sarah Rees Brennan’s trilogy, tying up plot threads woven throughout the three books and concluding ones developed in Surrender itself. In classic SRB style, of course, there were some twists that I didn’t see coming, one which had me shouting “NO!” at the top of my lungs. When I finished it and closed the book, I realised I was sad that the trilogy was now finished and there would be no more books about Nick, Alan, Mae, Jamie and Sin, and their world of magicians, demons, and the Goblin Market. I can’t wait for Sarah Rees Brennan’s next book!

To celebrate the release of The Demon’s Surrender, I’m giving away a copy of the UK edition! To enter, leave a comment in this post with your name, your email, and something about the trilogy that you enjoy (a favourite character, a favourite scene, whatever you want). The deadline is Friday, 24th June at 9pm EST, and then I’ll pick a winner with the help of a random generator. The giveaway is open internationally.

I love the scene where Nick tells Alan he can bind his powers, as long as he doesn’t leave.

I love the trilogy because even though it’s fantasy, it feels so real! I’ve been dying to get my hands on TDS.

I do like that SRB likes having magic out with the milk bottles, to paraphrase something I heard her say once. It makes it feel like it could happen to anyone at any time. Thanks for entering!

I love how the characters are primarily motivated by love for family–that’s a value that really resonates with me.

Yes, absolutely! The trilogy is a refreshing change in that regard, especially because of lot of YA is focused on romance. A teen spends a lot of time with their family, after all. Thanks for entering!

Thanks for the opportunity to win!!! This has to be one of my favorite series… I love Mae and Nick, one of my favorite scenes was from book 2 with the two of them on the roof in the rain :)

I love Mae’s hair :) it’s a little thing but I have had almost every colour of hair (including pink, purple and red) so I dig that she’s gutsy like me!

Mae is awesome! I would never be brave enough to die my hair pink (I have dyed it various shades of red, though, including strawberry red. Pink is a whole other… shade, however.) Thanks for entering…

Wow, thanks so much for the awesome giveaway (and for making it international)!

This whole series is filled with awesome scenes (especially the Nick/Alan ones), but I have to say that Nick’s memory in TDL when their Dad had died, and it was nighttime, and Nick was cold, and Alan came in? It pretty much melted my heart… =) So sweet, still gives me the warm and fuzzies when I think about it again! I’m so glad you liked it because I was a bit nervous about how Sin’s POV would sound compared to Nick and Mae’s.
    Thanks again

Hi! Firstly, I’m sorry your comments got caught in WordPress’ spam filter–it was a bit too enthusiastic for its own good! I love how important family is in the trilogy, with Nick and Alan, and also Mae and Jamie. It makes a refreshing change!

      Thanks for entering!

Thanks so much for the contest (and for making it international)!

There are so many awesome scenes in this series, but I have to say that Nick’s memory of when he was a bitty wee thing and cold in bed, and Alan came in…Awwwwww, that stole my heart! So sweet, I still makes me feel all melancholic when I think about it. =) I’m so glad you liked it though- I was a bit worried that Sin’s POV wouldn’t sound right, but now my fears have been allayed ;D

    Thanks again,
    ~Lucy

I’ll enter, if only because it might make me read the other two. (I tried the first one and couldn’t get into it, for some reason. I really want to try again, though.)

Oh, and the thing I enjoy about the trilogy is that (wait for, cop-out time) it demonstrates that you can be from Ireland and still make it big in the US-dominated world of YA publishing.

Because I used to angst about that. Quite a lot!

That used to worry me, too! It’s good to see so many Irish and UK authors have agents and deals outside of Ireland and the UK.

I think what I love most is simply Sarah Rees Brennan. She’s such a tease on twitter. I also love that each book is from a different POV. Keeps it interesting. Thanks for the giveaway.

SRB is awesome! I loved how the POV changed in all three books. I’m not sure why people didn’t like it. :( Thanks for entering.
